NewsJunior League Seed Grant Annual Report 2010 The strength of this program derives from the skill, commitment and experience of our staff. This is enhanced by the stability we have enjoyed over the years. Former residents of the group home can be fairly confident that they will know the person who answers the door if they come for a visit, even if they lived here many years ago. As much as we crave stability, change is inevitable. Many of us have been at C.Y.P. for a long time as staff, board members and volunteers. We recently went through a major change when Lorraine Wark retired as Program Director after more than thirty-one years at C.Y.P. We are happy to welcome Jackie Lauzon as our new Program Director. With Lorraine’s help we were able to manage this change with as little disruption as possible. Continuing with this theme, we want to acknowledge JoAnn Henry who has recently passed twenty years of valuable service at C.Y.P. In addition to her role in the group home with the kids and former residents, JoAnn deserves great credit for developing and constantly improving our life skills program. This has become an indispensible tool for helping kids prepare for independence. Although not marking anniversary milestones this year, we would like to acknowledge the rest of our hard working and dedicated full time staff – Debbie Foss, Bert Timothy, Tara Lee Jeanveau, Susan Gribbon and Julie Dunkley. Also present tonight are some of our relief staff and volunteers, without whom this program could not function. We continue to emphasize achievements in school and real work experience as essential ingredients for a successful return home or independence. The current group of residents deserve great credit for their excellent results. A large measure of their success is attributable to the assistance they receive from our volunteer tutors- Mellissa, Mike and Danielle. Congratulations to Brian who is off to University this fall. Congratulations are also in order for Chris, Amber and Jeremy who recently graduated from College with excellent results and were assisted by the Education Fund. For many years we have provided placement experience for college students from Child and Youth and Social Service work programs. This year we thank Ona, Kris Anne, Alison and Judith for their contributions to the program. We are fortunate to have Ona stay on for the summer thanks to a Canada Summer Jobs grant. The Transition Support Program continues to provide essential support for kids who are making the move to independent living. For some this involves making connections with a whole new world of programs and supports designed for adults. Kathleen does an excellent job of providing very practical support for these kids and she helps them open the doors to services they need. We continue to administer the Case Resolution Program for Halton. This also includes Connections Halton, WrapAround Services and the Respite Program. These services are coordinated by Melody Taylor. She continues to do an excellent job of making them run smoothly and stretch to help as many families as possible across all of the childen’s mental health and developmental services in Halton. We are grateful for ongoing funding and support from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and Susan Nickelchok, our Program Supervisor. We continue to rely on the Oakville United Way for the funding that they provide so we can maintain the program at its current level. Another constant in this program through all of its history is this old house. The building endures a lot of wear and tear making maintenance, repair and upkeep a constant job. You will have noticed the rebuilt front porch as you arrived. Although it is not luxurious, it continues to provide a comfortable home for the program. The final constant that ensures that this program remains the type of service kids and families need is our volunteer Board of Directors. They take on the task and responsibility of monitoring and maintaining the program. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable group of volunteers leading this program Change is inevitable and the program has always been able to adapt and evolve as the needs of families and kids have changed over the years. The stability we enjoy lets us look forward to the coming year with confidence that C.Y.P. will continue to be a valuable service to the community. Thank you all for coming and helping make this another successful year. Respectfully submitted, James Greer - President Kjeld Thomasen - Executive Director |
