C.Y.P. Education and Development Fund
Community Youth Programs has been serving the community for over thirty years. We are a registered charity and a non-profit corporation. Leadership is provided by the Board of Directors who are volunteers from the community.
Our primary service is a group home for older adolescents who are unable to live with a family and are unprepared for independent living. We provide a safe and structured home for the kids. The kids are expected to behave constructively and have part time jobs. We focus on good performance in school with the goal of successful graduation from high school.
We have excellent cooperation and support from local high schools. They often see dramatic improvement in school performance and we are able to support the teacher’s efforts by ensuring that the kids attend, complete homework and receive regular help from volunteer tutors.
We have found that success in school is a powerful element in building self esteem. Improved self esteem leads to a feeling of confidence which then encourages kids to plan for their future. Kids then develop goals beyond today or next week. They begin to think about college, university and post secondary training.
The expense of pursuing post secondary education can be overwhelming and many of our kids receive little or no financial support. Although they make tremendous strides in school while at C.Y.P. they are unable to compete for academic scholarships and bursaries due to deficits in their early schooling.
The C.Y.P. Education and Development Fund offers encouragement and tangible support in the form of small grants to help former residents of the group home who are attending college, university or post secondary training programs. The kids may qualify for loans through OSAP to cover accommodation and tuition expenses. The grants we provide are a supplement which can be used to cover costs such as books, transportation and other expenses.
The Fund is maintained by donations from the community and is administered by the Board of Directors. All donations to this fund are used to help kids whose families are unable to provide the necessary support.
Twenty-two kids have been helped to date. They are now contributing members of the community. The added benefit of this project is the effect on new kids in the program. They see the success of kids who were in their situation, they are encouraged by the support of the community and they begin to feel they have a real chance at a successful future.
Thank you for considering the C.Y.P. Education and Development Fund as your designated charity.
